After a slow start with things back in the Spring (lovely warm days but cold nights), produce is finally coming in thick and fast from the both polytunnel and the veg garden here at Eco-Gites of Lenault. I have grown possibly my best ever cabbages and lettuces, beans and chard are doing really well and I am picking trug-loads of tomatoes, courgettes and a good few peppers and aubergines.

I have also now been digging up the potatoes. A few are blighted, some are slug attacked but overall the harvest we have so far is very respectable. Thank you Tom and Ben for helping, although I do vaguely remember some bribery involved to get you out digging!

Rain earlier in the summer probably was responsible for the blight but now a spell of dry and often hot weather has not been helping things. Once the potatoes are cleared I like to fill the land with some late summer and winter crops, namely lettuce, leeks, cabbages and cauliflowers. Seedlings were bought at the market and the weather forecast looked at. No rain. However last night I was woken to the sound of good heavy rain, the sort that really soaks into the soil and helps turn a slightly parched looking veg patch into something much more healthy and verdant. Phew! Hopefully now the seedlings will not only survive but thrive.
